clavicembalo col piano e forte

Using video, found imagery and objects, Leah Carvell is interested in the piano as both mechanical instrument and as an object of desire. Piano Inside Out explores through an endlessly looping multi-screen video projection her feelings of obsession towards music and takes the viewer into the belly of the piano, examining the internal space. The deliberate removal of sound detaches the viewer from the usual association we have with the instrument. An Imaginary Tune and Six Miniature Pianos consider the piano in a broader narrative as an object of desire. Both pieces question the need for theoretical knowledge of music in order to feel an emotional attachment to the instrument itself.
